David Moyes brought back Vitaly Mykolenko, Tyler Dibling and Hayden Hackney into the starting X1 with Obrien again partering Tarkowski at CB
4-2-3-1 shape, with Thierno Barry leading the line and Tyler Dibling, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Tyrique George supporting him.
Everton XI: Pickford; Garner, O’Brien, Tarkowski, Mykolenko; Hackney, Röhl; Dibling, Dewsbury-Hall, George; Barry.
Everton were looking to get through to the Quarter-Final stage of the cup by beating Newcastle Utd and securing a tie away to Giant killers Fleetwood.
12 The visitors created the first real chance of the night when a long diagonal ball from Gonzalez found the head of Harvey Barnes who had got on the wrong side of Merlin Rohl and Barnes forced Pickford into action saving the headed effort and pushing the ball out for a corner.
The visitors were playing the better football and creating opportunities. Pickford spilt a tame Willock effort but luckily nobody could capatilise for Newcastle then Pickford had to save a long range effort from Schar after everybody just backed off the Newcastle centre back and allowed him a free strike from distance.
Everton had a penalty appeal after George struck a shot that hit Dan Burn but the defenders arm was down by his side so there was little chance of a penalty being given and it wasn’t.
34 Everton were starting to get on top of the game and a long ball from Jordan Pickford out towards the left hand touchline found Newcastle defender Dedic in a situation where George had closed him down. Rather than just clear the ball out Dedic tried to play the ball through George but it bounced off him and Hackney was the first onto the loose ball playing a nice little pass into the stride of the onrushing James Garner. Garner hit a kind of slide tackle esq shot that curled beautifully into the bottom corner of the net to put Everton ahead!
43 Newcastle had a penalty appeal after a bit of a scramble in the box saw Harvey Barnes go down with KDH closing him down but despite the appeals of the Newcastle players the referee wasn’t interested in giving Barnes a foul decision and awarding a penalty.
45 Barnes then had an effort after Rohl was dispossesed but Barnes effort didn’t give Pickford too much trouble after Barnes struck from just insode the area.
Everton though then counter attacked with Pickford finding KDH inside the circle in his own half & kdh went on a long run carrying the ball forward. He was bundled over about 30 yards out but the referee played advantage and Barry was able to get to the loose ball after the foul on KDH. Barry ran to the side of the penalty area and checked back onto his right foot after seeing hackney making a late run into the box. Barry clipped a beautiful cross into Hackneys path and Hayden found the net to double Everton’s lead.
Hackney stood with arms outstretched in front of the South stand to take in the applause for his first Everton goal.

Newcastle made three changes at the start of the second half with Wissa on for Osula, Elanga on for Barnes and Joelinton on for Ramsey.
53 A long ball found Wissa in behind Obrien and the ball bounced up for the Newcastle striker but with Pickford in no mans land thankfully Wissa couldn’t put much into the header and failed to lob the Everton keeper who was able to easily claim the effort.
60 Hackney was booked after kicking the ball away according to the referee.
63 Newcastle continued to push for a way back into the game. Halls corner was only punched away by Pickford as far as Elanga but he couldn’t keep his volley attempt down.
65 Hackney was replaced for Armstrong with the booking for Hackney probably playing a part in the decision.
67 Newcastle brought on Toure for Murphy.
69 Newcastle had been dominating the second half and passing the ball around easily but James Garner intercepted a ball and raced forward into the Newcastle half to launch a blues counter attack. KDH made a great diaginal run into space towards the left and Garner found him with a pass. KDH took the ball deep into the penalty area and picked out Thierno Barry at the back post who then took a touch to control the ball and then a second to place it into the side of the net and put Everton 3 nil up and send the crowd wild.
74 KDH went in the book after a sliding challenge out on the touchline on Wissa
76 Brennan Johnson come on for Tyler Dibling and Charly Alcaraz come on for Tyrique George
81 Mykolenko & Schar went into the book following a scuffle at a Newcastle corner.
81 Steur came on for Gonzalez for Newcastle
86 Maitland Niles come on for Mykolenko and Norgaard come on to replace KDH
88 Newcastle pulled a late goal back after Willcok clipped a lovely cross towards the back post and from just inside the 6 yard box Burn easily beat Obrien to the ball with Pickford on his goal line and he found the net.
89 Following the goal there was a brawl in the goal with Pickford trying to prevent Newcastle quickly retaining the ball and re starting the game. There was plenty of pushing and shoving from several players and the main culprits, Tarkowski, Pickford, Burn & Joelinton were booked by the referee.
Three minutes of added time were to be played but Everton were able to see out the game and book their place into the Quarter -Final stage of the League Cup!!
