Clare Wheeler has signed a new two-year contract with Everton Women, keeping the midfielder at the Club until the end of June 2027.
A key player for Australia on the international stage, Wheeler has established herself as a crucial cog in Brian Sorensen’s side since arriving on Merseyside in August 2022.
The 27-year-old took the captain’s armband in the Toffees’ past two fixtures, notably leading the Blues in an impressive 1-1 draw at Manchester City.
After committing her future to the Club, Wheeler spoke of her pride to wear the royal blue shirt and excitement for the future under owners, The Friedkin Group.
“I feel really excited,” she told evertontv. “It is great to have that trust from the manager to want me to stay and believe in me and this project that we have going on here. I really like this Club. I feel really at home here and I’m glad that I get to call it home for a bit longer.
“This team wants to strive for better. With the new owners coming in, there is a buzz around this team, and given our recent performances this year; it is seeing that there is a new chapter coming in.”
Looking ahead to a new chapter, Wheeler continued: “I really want to be a part of that and when Brian reached out with the option, it was something I was very interested in and I am really excited for.
“Growing up, you see it on the television screens, but now actually being over here and seeing what football means to the people at Everton – I compare it to religion. It means a lot.
“I feel extremely grateful to be part of that. I know when I wear the badge I try my best. That is something that the fans have told me that they respect that. They just want you to give it your all and that is what I try to do.”
Wheeler has continued to thrive under the stewardship of Head Coach Sorensen, having first worked together with Fortuna Hjørring, where the pair helped the Danish outfit secure Champions League qualification.
Her contract extension comes one week after Sorensen and his assistant Stephen Neligan signed new deals with Everton, keeping them at the Club until the end of June 2027.
“I have been really fortunate to have them now for a few seasons and I think for me, obviously being so far from home, it really matters to have a Club that makes you feel like family and then not only that, but have coaches that really believe in you,” added Wheeler.
“It matters a lot as a player and for me, I know that’s the environment I want to be in.”
