REPORT| West Ham Women 3-1 Everton Women

Everton fell to a disappointing 3-1 defeat against West Ham in the WSL at the Chigwell Construction Stadium.

West Ham took the lead through Anouk Denton inside 32 minutes, before Amber Tysiak added to their tally just before the break.

Shekeria Martinez’s then extended their advantage with a smart finish in the 54th minute, before Katja Snoeijs pulled a late goal back, denying the hosts a clean sheet.

The Hammers began on the front foot, throwing Emily Ramsey into action early on. She made a smart save to deny Viviane Asseyi in the first minute, before gathering Martinez’s cross ahead of Tsyiak.

Katie Robinson set-up a bright chance for Ornella Vignola after Hikaru Kitagawa picked her out on the goal-line. The Everton loanee immediately pulled the ball back to Vignola on the edge of the area, but her shot was blocked, denying the Spaniard.

West Ham continued their resilient defending as Vignola surged into the area from midfield, only to be stopped by a crucial tackle from Tysiak, preventing a potential goal-scoring opportunity just before the 20 minute mark.

Ten minutes later, the hosts broke the deadlock when Denton shaped as if to deliver a cross from the right, but instead drilled a shot towards the near post, catching Ramsey off guard and beating her before she could react.

They didn’t have to wait long to extend their lead, as Asseyi whipped in a dangerous corner toward the back post. Tysiak rose above everyone else and steered a firm header into the net, giving the hosts a comfortable cushion heading into the break.

Knowing something had to change, Brian Sorensen made adjustments for the second half bringing on Katja Snoeijs and Karen Holmgaard in place of Robinson and Rosa Van Gool.

But West Ham remained incredibly alert, taking the game further away from the Blues after Everton’s play out from the back was punished. Rion Ueki pulled the ball back from the goal line to Martinez in the middle of the area, and the German reacted calmly, lifting her shot over Ramsey.

With thirty minutes to play, Everton looked to reduce the deficit, a moment of promise sparked by Toni Payne as she crossed a threatening ball into Yuka Momiki’s path. The Japanese forward, however, couldn’t conjure a shot to trouble the keeper.

Katja Snoeijs, gave Everton a consolation in the 88th minute, following a delivery from Momiki which found Rion Ishikawa. Spotting Snoeijs unmarked, she pinged the ball back across to the far post where Snoeijs tapped home from close range.

However, the margin proved too large to overcome for the Blues, and they left East London empty-handed.

Everton remain in 10th, despite the two teams below them gaining ground – West Ham with their first win of the season, and Liverpool picking up a point against Chelsea.
