EVERTON WOMEN | Summer Review + Season Preview

It’s been an incredible summer for women’s football, with the Lionesses 2-1 victory over Germany at Wembley to secure the title of European Champions. The goal that sealed the victory was scored by Ex-Everton forward Chloe Kelly, who was one of 5 former blues to lift the trophy, Alex Greenwood, Jill Scott, Lucy Bronze and Nikita Parris were all involved in the historic win. Many of our current players were also involved in the Euro’s campaign. Nathalie Björn and Hanna Bennison both helped Sweden reach the semi-final. A key highlight was Bennison’s sensational strike against Switzerland in a 2-1 win. Aurora Galli was also called up for duty for Italy. Rikke Sevecke was in the Danish side for the campaign too, and little did we know that many of our newest recruitments would also be in the Danish side.

The summer break has been a busy time for the Toffee’s with new manager Brian Sørensen coming in after Interim manager Chris Roberts took charge for the rest of the 21/22 season. Sørensen was an important part of the success of Danish side Fortuna Hjørring in the Danish Championship and UEFA Women’s Champions League, where he lead them to the quarterfinals. Our new manager has already made an impact, making 8 new summer signings. The first of which is Jess Park, a promising new player who has joined on a season long loan from Manchester City. Katja Snoeijs has signed a two year contract until the end of June 2024, a Dutch international who will bring lots of experience to the team. Goalkeeper Emily Ramsey joins on loan from Manchester United for the season after a previous loan spell at Birmingham City. Twins Sara and Karen Holmgaard signed two year contracts with the blues until June 2024, as well as Katrina Veje who plays at left back and is also a Danish international. Australian international Clare Wheeler has joined on loan from Fortuna Hjørring. Our latest summer signing is Aggie Beever-Jones, who has joined on a season long loan from Chelsea. Defender Kenzie Weir signed her first professional contract with Everton, agreeing a three year deal until June 2025. Both Nicoline Sørensen and Rikke Sevecke agreed one year contract extensions with the blues!

This summer we got to see many of our new signings in action during 3 pre season games. Everton’s first outing ended in a 2-1 win at Finch Farm against BK Häcken. Megan Finnigan put the blues infront and Hanna Bennison sealed the win with a brilliant shot from distance. Our second game resulted in a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa away at Bodymoor Heath Training Ground. Lucy Graham’s late strike secured a draw for the Toffee’s after our former Club Captain Danielle Turner gave the host’s the lead after 11 minutes. Unfortunately, our final game ended in a 1-0 defeat to Manchester United, however Everton started the game strong and looked comfortable in possession. Jess Park was a stand out player, she looked dominant upfront, breaking down United’s defence on multiple occasions.

Everton Women’s first game of the new season is at home on Sunday the 11th of September against Leicester City, kick off is at 1pm. Other exciting upcoming games include the first Merseyside derby which will be hosted away at Anfield on Sunday the 25th of September. Our home game against Manchester United has been selected for broadcast and will be live on BBC One, kick off is at 2pm on Sunday the 30th of October.

Hoping for an exciting and successful season for our women!

Really enjoyable piece Keira. Hopefully we will see a lot more focus on the women’s team over the course of the season, both from the club and from social media writers. I think you missed out Kenza Dali from your list of blues (albeit now an ex-blue) who featured at the Euros. Good luck to Kenza and all the players who left us in the summer, especially Daniele and Simone, who gave such great service to the club and will always get a great welcome at Walton Hall Park.
